Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science
Applied Respiratory Physiology

The Applied Respiratory Physiology Laboratory is centered around the study of how breathing affects the many integrated functions that form the foundation for rehabilitation.  The focus of our lab is a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the control of breathing and blood flow distribution in health and disease across the lifespan.

One of our main goals is to develop breathing- and exercise-based therapeutic strategies to optimize the coupling of oxygen transport to local tissue requirements. We use a variety of methods such as ultrasonography, electromyography, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), pulmonary function testing, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing to evaluate the effects of interventions such as inspiratory muscle training.

Focus areas:

  • Control of breathing during exercise
  • Blood flow regulation
  • Muscle oxygenation
  • Sickle cell disease
