Scholarships and Awards

University of Maryland, Baltimore Doctor of Physical Therapy students can apply for various scholarships. Some are available through the admissions process, and some are available while they are enrolled.

Donald J. Hobart Scholarship

This endowed fund, in honor of the contributions made by Donald J. Hobart, PhD, provides scholarships for students enrolled in their second or third year of the UMSOM Department of PTRS. This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of leadership abilities, academic standing, compassion and humanitarian qualities, and involvement in extracurricular activities. Both Second and Third Year DPT students are eligible to apply.

Karyn E. Wade Memorial Scholarship

The Karyn E. Wade Memorial Scholarship provides endowed scholarship support for students in good academic standing as they enter their third and final year of study. Recipients of this scholarship will be selected based on their participation in community service or volunteer activities. Students will also have to submit a short essay that reflects their knowledge of the effects of Lupus. Second Year DPT students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Stephen M. Levine Memorial Scholarship

The Stephen M. Levine Memorial Scholarship provides endowed scholarship support for third year students in the UMSOM Department of PTRS who demonstrate the potential to change the profession with their outspoken drive to improve clinical care. Selected students must be excellent communicators, compassionate, strong leaders, and driven to change and improve the physical therapy profession. Second Year DPT students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Pekar-Abell Scholarship

The Pekar-Abell Scholarship provides scholarships for students enrolled in their third year of the physical therapy program who have demonstrated a passion for working with children and a commitment to pediatric physical therapy, especially those with severe disabilities, through performance in the program and by the intention to work in a pediatric setting. Third Year DPT students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Laura G. Levine-Mandell Memorial Scholarship

The Laura G. Levine-Mandell Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of Laura G. Levine-Mendell by annually providing a scholarship to a deserving and compassionate third-year student from the UMSOM Department of PTRS who has demonstrated outstanding clinical proficiency in their senior year. Third Year DPT students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Elizabeth G. Macaulay Memorial Award for Clinical Proficiency

The Elizabeth G. Macaulay Memorial Award for Clinical Proficiency annually supports an award for a graduating student from the Department of PTRS at the UMSOM who has demonstrated outstanding clinical proficiency in their senior year. Third Year DPT students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Orthopedic Physical Therapist Award

The Orthopedic Physical Therapist Award is awarded to a graduating UMSOM PTRS student who plans to practice in orthopedic PT. Third Year DPT students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Pediatric Physical Therapist Award (Satterfield)

The Pediatric Physical Therapist Award supports an annual award to third-year UMSOM PTRS students who specialize in Pediatrics. Third Year DPT students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Mary Rodgers, DPT/PhD Physical Therapy Research Scholarship Endowment

The Mary Rogers, DPT/PhD Physical Therapy Research Scholarship provides scholarship support for a third-year student enrolled in the dual degree DPT/PhD Program in the Department of PTRS Department at the School. Third Year students enrolled in the Dual Degree DPT/PhD Program are eligible for this scholarship.

University Diversity Scholarship

The purpose of the University Diversity Scholarship is to attract students that bring diversity to the discipline. This scholarship can be awarded during the admissions process to students who match the program’s criteria defining diversity.

Criteria
  • Awarded to students who meet the criteria for:
    • First Generation Students
    • Veterans
    • Underrepresented Populations
  • Demonstrated financial need according to the FAFSA

Class of 1964 Physical Therapy Scholarship 

The Class of 1964 Physical Therapy Scholarship provides endowed scholarship support for students enrolled in a degree program in the Department of PTRS at the UMSOM based on demonstrated academic achievement and financial need.

Physical Therapy General Scholarship

The Physical Therapy General Scholarship is annually awarded to 5 DPT students with demonstrated financial need and a strong academic record.

Criteria
  • The Physical Therapy General Scholarship is annually awarded to 5 incoming DPT students with demonstrated financial need and a strong academic record.
    • Strong undergraduate academic record
  • Demonstrated financial need according to the FAFSA

Conroy/Simone Community Service Scholarship Endowment

The Conroy/Simone Community Service Scholarship Endowment provides endowed scholarship support for a student in the Department of PTRS at the UMSOM who has demonstrated financial need and a proven track record of community service. 

Criteria
  • Specific Financial Status Based on Current FAFSA on file for next academic year
  • Proven Record of Community Service

Carolyn Chanoski PT ‘87 and Lynn Garrison Scholarship

The Carolyn Chanoski PT ‘87 and Lynn Garrison Scholarship provides endowed scholarship support for a student in the Department of PTRS at the UMSOM who has demonstrated financial need and exhibited interest in working with geriatric populations.

  • Interest in Working with Geriatric Populations
  • Specific Financial Status Based on Current FAFSA on file for next academic year
  • Awarded student cannot be the recipient of additional University scholarships other than the Diversity Scholarship

Florence P Kendall Scholarship

The Florence P Kendall Scholarship provides scholarship support for new students enrolled in the Physical Therapy Program at the UMSOM Department of PTRS.

Criteria
  • Awarded to incoming student with top GPA.

Brian Bainbridge Memorial Scholarship

The Brian Bainbridge Memorial Scholarship provides scholarship support for students enrolled in the Physical Therapy Program at the UMSOM, Department of PTRS.

Criteria

  • Awarded student cannot be the recipient of additional University scholarships other than the Diversity Scholarship
