Projects

  • Effects of robot-assisted therapeutic intervention for individuals who have suffered a stroke gait parameters: One new approach to post-stroke rehabilitation has been to develop robotics-assisted therapies to improve hemiparetic limb function. A novel impedance controlled ankle robot has been developed to improve hemiparetic ankle motor control and its contributions to gait after stroke. The robot is attached to the leg and is designed to be used walking overground (OG) or on a treadmill (TM) to augment existing gait therapy. The purpose of this work is to assess the effects of the robot’s mass on gait parameters and joint kinematics of chronic stroke survivors (n=9) and nondisabled older subjects (n=6) when wearing this device during OG and TM walking.

  • Effect of therapeutic intervention on gait parameters for individuals post-hip fracture and those that are older. Adults, eighty years and older, demonstrate decreased functional activity, increased self care dependency, and decline in balance. Specifically, balance ability, strength, cardiovascular conditioning and mobility decline with increased aging. Exercise can minimize these negative outcomes, reduce the disability burden, and promote functional improvement. This project assesses the effect of various interventions on gait and balance activities, as measured by single limb stance times, and gait mat analysis.
