Giving to PTRS
Memorial Gifts: Kendall Scholarship Fund
Florence P. Kendall, PT, FAPTA (1910-2006) was a remarkable woman who has touched countless lives. Her energy, enthusiasm and commitment to excellence will be forever remembered by her patients, students, colleagues and friends. She will be greatly missed.
The Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science holds a very special place in its heart for Florence. Not only was she the "founding foremother" of the physical therapy program at the University of Maryland, but she remained involved throughout the past 50 years as a donor, faculty member, and lecturer. In 1999, she was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the School. The Kendall Physical Therapy Collection was established the following year at the UMB Health Sciences and Human Services Library, making the Kendall archives accessible to people around the world.
Over the years, Florence provided the hallmark of clinical expertise for hundreds of students and alumni. Through her superior skills as a clinician, author, educator, and mentor, she has made an incalculable contribution to the practice of physical therapy and to our Department. Therefore, in her honor, the Department has established the Florence Kendall Scholarship Endowment. This fund will continue the Kendall legacy by offering annual scholarship awards to exceptional incoming students who enroll in the entry-level physical therapy program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Memorial gifts to the Kendall Scholarship Fund can be made payable to the UMB Foundation, Inc. and mailed to:
100 N. Greene Street, Suite 600
Baltimore, MD 21201
An acknowledgement card will be sent to the Kendall family for each contribution that is received. If you would like us to add a personal message on the card please include the exact wording along with your donation. Gifts may also be made online. Just be sure to indicate in the Questions/Comments box that your gift should be restricted to the Kendall Scholarship Fund.

NOTE: The APTA is opposed, as a matter of health care policy, to arrangements under which sources of referral (including physicians) stand to profit from referring patients for physical therapy. Because of this policy, the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, does not form promotional partnerships with any company representing a physical therapy practice in which any physician has a financial interest in the practice and/or refers patients to an employed physical therapist or physical therapist assistant.

Your pledge can be paid in full, or in installments of your choice over a period of up to five years. In addition you may want to consider making a planned gift in the form of a bequest or charitable gift annuity.

There are many ways to support our Department, its programs, students and research. We rely on financial support from individuals, businesses and foundations to ensure that the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science can continue to provide the best, most progressive physical therapy education in Maryland. We hope you will consider making a meaningful gift to the Department in one or more of the following ways:
- The Annual Fund
When you make a gift to the Annual Fund, you are doing much more than supporting the Department's administrative costs - you are ultimately helping to guide the profession of physical therapy and further research in rehabilitation science. Annual giving provides ongoing income for expansion of our academic programs, increased tuition assistance, improvements in facilities, equipment & technology upgrades, new student life activities and professional development opportunities. These funds help supplement rising tuition costs and assures that we can continue to offer our entry-level physical therapy students the best hands-on learning experiences available. They also help fund post-professional programs and other continuing education opportunities, as well as promoting evidence-based clinical practices through collaborative research.
In addition to supporting a broad range of student needs a donor can request that their gift be restricted toward our General Scholarship Fund or one of the following specific funds:
-
Brian Bainbridge Memorial (scholarship)
-
David Solomon Memorial (equipment)
-
Donald J. Hobart Scholarship
-
Emergency Student Loan
-
Florence P. Kendall Scholarship

Matching Gifts
Double the size of your gift. Many companies encourage their employees to contribute by agreeing to match the employee's gift. To find out if your company has a Matching Gifts Program, contact your Human Resources Department or personnel representative. -
Other Tax Deductible Gifts
Of course a gift of cash is always appreciated and probably the easiest way to give. But did you know that there are other giving options that can provide you with significant tax benefits while enabling you to make a larger gift than you ever thought possible? Ask us about gifting securities, real estate or life insurance or contact your financial advisor. -
Bequests
Leave your legacy by making a gift in your Will. A bequest is one of the simplest ways to remember and further advance those causes you care about most. If you plan to make a charitable gift by Will, you should meet with your attorney to discuss your wishes in detail. Should you need any suggestions for specific wording, please contact us. Also, let us know if you name the "Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, University of Maryland, Baltimore" as a beneficiary in your Will. We would like the opportunity to thank you in advance for your intended gift. -
Planned Gifts
A planned or deferred gift refers to assets that provide life income benefits to the donor and/or other beneficiaries, with the remainder becoming a charitable gift after death. These arrangements can provide substantial income or estate tax benefits to you and your family. They also can allow you to make a sizable gift through your estate without reducing inheritances to your children. There are several types of planned gift options including Charitable Gift Annuity, Charitable Remainder Trust, Charitable Lead Trust, and Wealth Replacement Trust. We can provide you with more information and specific proposals outlining the benefits to you and your family. To find out what giving option is right for you, speak with your attorney or financial advisor before finalizing your gift. For More Information on Planned Giving, click here. -
Endowments and Special Gifts
Endow = to make a grant of money providing for continuing support or maintenance.
True immortality is an impossible dream, but if you would like to be remembered for years to come for your investment in the future of physical therapy, consider creating an endowment in your own name or in the name of someone in memoriam. Endowments can be established to support student scholarships, faculty chairs and professorships, research projects, building updates, technology upgrades, or curricular innovations. These funds provide an ongoing source of income for financing a concern that's close to your heart. Through an endowment, your gifts are kept in a restricted account to be spent only for the specific purpose you directed. Because of the long-term nature of an endowment, there may be minimum amounts associated with this type of gift. Please contact Karen McGuire before making such an arrangement.Karen McGuire
