Clinical Education
Clinical education is a vital component of the entry-level curriculum at UMB. In the academic setting, the student is instructed in basic sciences, social sciences, and the theory and practice of physical therapy. In the clinical environment, the student is afforded an opportunity to apply didactic knowledge, develop professional behaviors, and practice hands-on skills. This aspect of the educational experience is essential since these learning experiences are difficult to duplicate within the academic environment. It is only within the clinical setting that the higher levels of integration and application of knowledge, skills, and values may be accomplished. The general emphasis of the clinical education component in keeping with the Department's educational philosophy is to cultivate a level of clinical competence necessary to ensure that all program graduates will be able to provide effective, efficient, and humanistic health care in a variety of practice settings. Therefore, clinical education should occur in a variety of clinical settings, which afford the student opportunities to experience an interdisciplinary team approach in inpatient or outpatient, private practice setting, or specialty practice situations.

Entry-Level DPT Student Activities
- Ropes Course for Class of 2009 - This year the orientation program for the DPT Class of 2009 included a ropes-and-initiative course.
During the six hour program, held on the campus of the University of Maryland College Park, the new students participated in a variety of activities designed to build self-esteem, initiate interpersonal interaction and build group cohesion. The course provided a great opportunity for the new DPT students to have fun, quickly breakdown barriers to communication and also allowed them to get to know their fellow classmates better.
As part of the end of the day wrap-up, Carrie Foeller, Clinical Education Director and Tonas Kalil Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education, reviewed with the students the confidence, teamwork, communication, and/or problem solving skills they used to complete the days activities. “It is our sincere hope that all they learned out on the course will stay with them as they advance through the DPT program. These are the skills that make a successful physical therapy student.”
Funding for the ropes-and-initiative course was generously provided by the PTRS Alumni Association.
Pitt-Marquette Challenge - While attending the October 2005 National Student Conclave in Denver, our students once again accepted the call to participate in the Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge. PT students all over the country conduct activities to raise money for the Challenge which supports on-going research in the physical therapy profession.
The DPT Class of 2007 sponsored the PT Classic Best Ball Golf Tournament as one of Its major fundraising activities. The event was held on April 1, 2006, at the Hollow Creek Golf Club in Middletown, MD. The event included an 8:00 am Continental Breakfast, Green and Cart Fees, BBQ Lunch Buffet, Unlimited Soft Drinks, water, free beer and prizes.
Because of generous donations by alumni, paid advertising and ticket sales the tournament was a big success and raised more than $5,000. Jana Lookingbill and Robin Quinn, DPT Class of 2007 were the student coordinators and were primarily responsible for the success of the day.
On April 16, 2006, a full crowd was on hand to watch the Class of 2007 as they played against the MD Ravens Wheelchair Basketball Team. Funds were raised through ticket sales and sponsored advertising. Karyn Lowry, DPT Class of 2007 served as the student coordinator.
The combined total raised for the Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge $9, 575.
